Event Description:

The purpose of learning a world language is to be able to interact in a culturally appropriate way and complete authentic tasks in the language. It is more important than ever to provide students with an opportunity to apply their developing language proficiency. The goal of this Bootcamp project is to establish a venue where students can complete a variety of authentic, real-world tasks as preparation or practice for the demonstration of proficiency for the Michigan Seal of Biliteracy, an honor given to graduating Seniors who demonstrate high literacy skills in English and a world language. In these half-day sessions, students complete a "linguistic obstacle course" geared at the Intermediate High level. At each station, students interact with native-speakers or educated language speakers to complete performance tasks.Teachers are highly encouraged to attend this event with their students to experience standards-based, proficiency-oriented performance assessment. The goal of this annual event is to support students in their progress toward the attainment of the Seal of Biliteracy in a relaxed, fun, and engaging manner. The Bootcamp is open to high school students who are enrolled in a level 3 or above world language course in their district. Students who participate will receive a certificate acknowledging their language skills and a Seal of Biliteracy Bootcamp t-shirt. Student participants are asked to bring earbuds and a device to connect to the station tasks or in case they have to wait in line.
