Event Description:

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented method of communication attentive to the language of change. It seeks to strengthen a person’s motivation to change by eliciting and exploring their own arguments for change. It is an evidence-based practice that began in substance abuse and addictions and was picked up by healthcare (for life style changes), corrections (probation/parole) and now in schools. The focus will be on the use of MI with challenging students to help them become motivated and improve outcomes. This session will engage participants in learning MI in a multimodal, interactive way to facilitate understanding, practice skills and reflect on integrating its' use. The session will explore why MI belongs in schools with a brief overview of research and practice, touching on neurobiology, psychological needs and examples of its use in schools, including with at-risk students. The session will add structure to strength-based student-centered approaches Registration Deadline 1/14/15. Note-Due to funding guidelines, 224 seats are available for Oakland County Public Schools and PSA/Charter School employees for $15. There are 13 seats available for participants from Oakland County Private Schools and Agencies, and 13 seats available for out-of-county participants at a cost of $26 per participant.
