Event Description:

Writing in the World Language Classroom is a course designed for K-12 world language teachers. Participants will use Adobe Connect to meet two 2-hour sessions. Additionally participants will use Moodle to complete several short homework assignments for this course.

Session 1: Introduction to Writing in the World Language Classroom
Facilitator: Dr. Anne Nerenz, Eastern Michigan University
Wednesday, March 4, 2015, 4:00-6:00 pm

The first session in the series Writing in the World Language Classroom focuses on the importance of writing in daily social and professional contexts. Participants will learn about the role of writing within the various standards documents that guide the profession, including the national and state standards as well as compare the Common Core Standards with the 5 Cs in World Languages. Participants will learn how to develop writing assignments for beginners targeting Letters and characters then words and groups of words.

Follow up assignments:

• By March 8, Prepare a draft document (webpage, newsletter, brochure) for counselors, administrators, teachers in other disciplines, and parents stating in user-friendly terms how world languages support the common core to the Moodle.

• By March 8, design a writing activity focusing on words and groups of words and post it to the Moodle.

• By March 10, comment on at least two other documents or activities.

Session 2: Formulaic Phrases and Writing Sentences
Facilitator: Dr. Anne Nerenz, Eastern Michigan University
Wednesday, March 11, 2015, 4:00-6:00 pm

The second session of the Writing in the World Language Classroom focuses on moving students from novice mid to novice high/intermediate low levels of proficiency in writing. Participants will focus on writing activities dealing with formulaic phrases and writing at the sentence level.

Follow up assignments:

• By March 15, comment on at least two activities that were posted during the workshop.

• By March 18, design another writing activity focusing on formulaic phrases and sentences and post it to the Moodle.

• By March 22, comment on at least two activities that were posted in the Moodle.

• By March 25, post your final reflection to the Moodle.

• By March 29, comment on, or respond, to someone else’s reflection
