Event Description:

This two-day institute is designed to illustrate how teachers can launch an Algebra 1 course with lessons that equip students with strategies and tools to study functions throughout the course. By leveraging students' ways of thinking, teachers can increase students' access and understanding to this foundational content strand. Participants will actively engage in mathematical tasks that have multiple entry points and provide opportunities to build conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Appropriate scaffolding for diverse learners will also be highlighted. As this content is particularly weak in current instructional materials, participants will collaborate to articulate how the collection of resources and tasks could work together to provide a coherent storyline for students.

Participants will explore released SAT items and ways in which the habits of mind developed in studying functions have potential to increase students success on the SAT.general and special eduction teachers, coordintators/ coaches SCECH's pending.
