Event Description:

This program will kick off with one day professional learning held at Oakland Schools. Participants will have a chance to lift up misconceptions regarding the literacy needs of young men of color, in addition to interacting with research-based best practice documents on the topic. Participants will prepare an action plan for enacting instructional shifts to better meet the needs of young men of color, specifically in the area of reading. A webinar for all participants will occur midway through the series, in order for participants to share their experiences and change course, if necessary. The group will reconvene at Oakland Schools in the spring for a collective share-out of their shifts in practice, as well as a collectively constructed document of "what works" when meeting the literacy needs for young men of color. This collective document can be shared widely with interested teachers and districts.
