Event Description:

This event is for active Oakland County Public Schools Educators and PSA's only.

More than ever, people are talking about mindfulness. Teachers are interested in bringing mindfulness to the classroom. Principals and administrators are not sure what it is and how it can be helpful. This course will introduce participants to several fundamental practices of mindfulness that they can use for their own self-care. This course will not address the application of mindfulness in the classroom.

Mindfulness is a way of intentionally attending to one’s direct experience (bodily sensations, thoughts, and emotions) in the present moment, with a sense of openness, curiosity and kindness to what is noticed. When we learn to cultivate mindfulness as a skill, we are better able to focus our attention, reduce our daily stress, meet the joy and challenges of daily life with ease and extend compassion and kindness to ourselves and others.

This course will be primarily experiential, with access to audio recordings provided for home practice. It is important to note that benefits derived from this course are directly related to the degree that participants choose to attend all classes and engage with these practices on their own over the six week period.

A central objective of this course is to facilitate participants’ capacity to begin to develop their own mindfulness personal practice. At the conclusion of the course, resources will be provided to further participants’ interest in enriching their experience of mindfulness. An optional half-day of concentrated practice on February 9 will be available sponsored through the Michigan Collaborative for Mindfulness in Education. This class is open to beginners as well as to those wishing to continue to refresh their practice.
