BACKGROUND: The Michigan Department of Education has released a Multi-Tiered System of Support Framework to guide districts and schools in implementing a systemic process for designing core instruction, interventions, and supports to address the academic and non-academic needs and assets of all students. The accompanying Practice Profile describes the philosophy, research base, and five essential components of an effective multi-tiered system of support. These "essentials" include the following:
1-Team-Based Leadership
2-Tiered Delivery System
3-Selection and Implementation of Instruction, Interventions and Supports
4-Comprehensive Screening & Assessment System, and
5-Continuous Data-Based Decision-Making.
Within each component, the Practice Profile describes the "essential practices" of the district team responsible for leading and supporting MTSS system-wide.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Participants of this session will explore the essential components of the MDE MTSS Framework and consider how they relate to systems in place in their districts/schools. Through a deeper study of the Practice Profile, participants will build shared understanding of the district practices, supports, and resources necessary for effective implementation of MTSS system-wide. Time for individual/team reflection and planning will be provided, along with an opportunity to partner with others for sharing and feedback.
Additional support is available through follow-up technical assistance and site-based consultation, as requested, to assist district/school leaders in using the Practice Profile and other fidelity tools to inform district/school planning.
