Event Description: |
This interactive Early Literacy series is for K-3 literacy coaches, interventionist, and classroom teachers. For Part 1, Dr. Laura Tortorelli from MSU will lead participants in gaining a deeper knowledge of phonemic & phonological awareness and phonics instruction. They will also obtain tools for practice that help students apply knowledge of letter-sound relationships taught by reading books or other connected texts that include those relationships. Participants will receive the book, Letter Lessons and First Words: Phonics Foundations That Work, by Heidi Anne Mesmer. Highlights from Dr. Tortorelli’s presentation will be linked to the Practices #1, #4, and #5 of the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy document. It’s time to shift the way teachers think about vocabulary instruction. Part 2 of this series will help educators move away from looking up words in the dictionary and writing out definitions for words listed at the beginning of a textbook chapter. Join MSU’s Tanya Wright, Ph.D. to engage in research-supported instructional practices created to ensure that all literacy learners have the tools needed to expand their vocabulary knowledge. Dr. Wright’s presentation will raise key components from Essentials #1, #2, and #7 along with connections to the book, No More "Look-Up the List" Vocabulary Instruction, which is a part of the Not This But That series edited by Dr. Nell K. Duke & Dr. Ellin Oliver Keene. |
